Have you ever wished for a second chance — an opportunity to rewrite a difficult chapter in your life? It seems to be part of human nature, this deep yearning for a “do-over.” Some say it’s our destiny to create our healing, a way to reprogram our cellular memory.

Yoga philosophy teaches us to surrender and accept what’s meant to be, while others believe we are meant to learn from adversity and rise stronger. But one thing is certain — once we’ve faced life’s toughest challenges, we’re never quite the same.

Sam Bloom’s Journey: When Life Hands You a Do-Over

If you’ve seen Penguin Bloom with Naomi Watts or read the bestselling book, you’re familiar with Sam Bloom’s story. Before 2013, Sam had everything she dreamed of: a fulfilling career, travel, a loving husband, and three spirited boys. Then, in one shocking moment, her world changed.

While on a family holiday in Thailand, Sam fell six metres through a rotten balcony railing, sustaining a spinal cord injury that left her paralysed from the chest down. Not only did she lose her mobility, but she also endured relentless nerve pain. Sam says she would do anything to have her old life back — but life, as it often does, had other plans.

How a Magpie Turned Grief Into Hope

Then came Penguin — a tiny magpie chick with a broken wing that the Bloom family rescued. Caring for the bird shifted Sam’s focus away from her grief, reigniting a spark within her. In nurturing Penguin, Sam found a new purpose.

Her journey took her from grief to greatness: she became a competitive para canoeist and a three-time World Champion para-surfer. The Bloom family’s story, shared on Instagram, became a bestselling book, a movie, and a global message of resilience.

A Do-Over for Us All

I had the privilege of interviewing Sam and her ever-supportive husband, Cameron, on a podcast where they shared their remarkable journey. Sam’s story proves that when life hands us a plot twist, we can choose to stay stuck in sorrow or take control and rewrite our narrative. Her story resonates with anyone longing for a do-over:

• A mother who’s determined to have a different experience with her second pregnancy.
• A man who’s healing after an abusive relationship, now building a healthy partnership.
• A professional who survived a toxic workplace, now setting stronger boundaries and flourishing in a new career.

Healing doesn’t mean erasing the past; it’s about using our experiences to create a different future.

What’s Your Next Chapter?

When adversity strikes, it’s easy to think, What’s the point? This always happens to me! But what if we reframe that thought? That was a tough lesson, but I’m going to make sure I create a better experience next time.

Every setback is an opportunity for a comeback. What will you choose to do with yours?

Finding Support in the Midst of Healing

Healing isn’t just about time passing — it’s about the choices we make, the perspectives we shift, and the support we embrace along the way. Whether through nature, creative expression, or physical movement, healing often involves guidance, reflection, and deep conversations.

As a coach and counsellor, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people as they navigate the beautiful, messy process of healing and preparing for their next season. Having someone in your corner makes all the difference, especially when you’re ready to rewrite your chapter. While we can’t always control what happens to us, we can choose how we write our next chapter of healing.

Until we cross paths again, I hope your world is shining brightly,
