Your throat chakra is the energy centre that is associated with your communication and expression. It represents the way you speak, communicate and express your truth, as well as your ability to listen beyond what has been said.

If your throat chakra is open and healthy, you are a charismatic, centred, truthful and balanced soul who is very intuitive and expressive. You honour your inner voice as much as anyone else’s, and are thus able to say ‘no’ when needed, which creates very healthy boundaries between yourself and others.
Physical Connection: The bronchial and vocal apparatus, lungs and the alimentary canal
Psychological functions: How you take in and assimilate things, your sense of space, relating to your position within society and professional work.
When your throat centre is balanced, you’ll have a resonant voice, be a good listener, have a good sense of timing and rhythm, clear communication and live creatively. When you’re balanced, you:
- Communicate easily, clearly and with authority
- Have a harmonious voice that’s influential. contented, centred and can live in the present,
- Have a great sense of timing, good speaker

A deficient chakra means you have weakness or avoidance around the issues of the chakra. The inability to vocalise feelings, fear of speaking, and introversion are all signs of deficiency in this area.
When the throat chakra is deficient we may feel unable to speak or express ourselves, especially in the realm of feeling and emotion. Communication can break down, or become non existent and we can feel a distinct rift between how we feel inside, and how we express ourselves to others.
This can cause us to become out of sync and we can feel incongruent within ourselves. The actual voice may sound weak, thwarted or unsubstantial. In order to compensate for this lack of congruency, deficiency in the throat chakra can lead to dishonesty, both within the self and with others. A deficient 5th chakra can cause us to ‘keep our mouths shut’ even if we feel we have something to say.
Symptoms of Deficiency
- fear of speaking
- small, weak voice
- difficulty putting feelings into words
- introversion, shyness
- tone deaf, poor rhythm.
If a chakra is excessive, you overcompensate with actions to try to heal that chakra. Those with an excessive throat chakra may talk too much and not listen, have a loud, intrusive voice, and be prone to gossip.
When the throat chakra is excessive this can lead to incessant talking or verbalisations. We can endlessly carry a conversation without saying anything of real value or content we often see this in form of gossiping.
The physical voice may be loud and piercing, possibly unpleasant. An excessive fifth chakra may cause us to ‘over-share’ as energy pours out of us through our words, and is projected onto others. We may raise our voice too easily when excited or angry, often out of context for the situation.
Excessive Symptoms
- too much talking, talking as a defense
- inability to listen, poor auditory comprehension
- gossiping
- dominating voice
- interruptions
- over explaining simple concepts
